KLT Customs Command made a significant seizure of Cannabis Indica worth N256 million.
The Nigeria Customs Service has made a significant breakthrough in combating illicit drug trafficking. Vigilance officers from the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, intercepted 140 parcels of cannabis sativa smuggled from Canada. The seized cannabis weighed 51.25 kg and had a street value of N256,250,000 [2).
The Customs Area Controller of Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command, Comptroller Joy Edeldouk, recently handed over a significant seizure of cannabis sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) collaboration with other agencies in combating illicit activities.
This seizure was made possible by credible intelligence. According to Comptroller Joy Edeldouk, the seized drugs violated Section 55, subsections 1c and 1f, of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
The recent interception of 51.25kg of cannabis sativa is a significant win for Nigeria’s efforts to safeguard its borders from illicit substances. This accomplishment highlights the dedication of authorities to protecting citizens from the harmful effects of cannabis.
The negative impact of cannabis sativa, according to the report, on individuals, families and society at large causes destruction to lives, lead to increase in crime, fueling violence and crisis and other societal vices.
Comptroller Edeldouk emphasized that intercepting these harmful substances is crucial in preventing untold harm and securing a safer future for citizens, particularly the youth. The risks associated with cannabis are alarming, especially for young people.
She said the full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on individuals caught attempting to smuggle contrabands or banned substances into Nigeria
Beside this, she warned all unscrupulous importers who may contemplate testing the resolve of Nigeria Customs Service to keep clear from their nefarious activities, adding that the command will not hesitate to bring those involved in illegal importation to justice.
In addition to this, she said the Nigeria Customs Service in collaboration with other agencies will continue to intensify its efforts to rid the country of dangerous contraband substances.
She told law abiding citizens and legitimate traders that the command is committed to ensuring that facilitation of legitimate trade is unhindered, adding that there is no room for criminality for those seeking to engage in illegal activities.
Aside from this, she announced that any one who breach the law of the country will be caught and prosecuted according to the rule of law.
At the end, she thanked the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team for their steadfast support and guidance, while assuring them that officers and men of the command will continue to comply fully with the mandate of the Service.
