Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar: NDLEA’S National Crackdown on Illicit Drugs.
Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Tin-Can Island Command, is indeed a well-respected figure, known for his leadership and commitment to curbing the drug menace in Nigeria. Abubakar’s leadership style is aligned with that of his boss, Brig. General Buba Marwa (rtd), who has been championing the cause of drug eradication in Nigeria.
Recently in a chat with our correspondent in his office, in his refined words said that NDLEA is on mission to make Nigeria a drug-free nation to the admiration of all. He also spoke on the dynamic leadership of NDLEA and the Agency’s willness and strategies to take drug cartels out of business and to stop the influx of illicit drugs into the country to the barest minimum.
According to Mr. Abubakar, NDLEA has came a long way and since its inception covering operations at the seaports, airports, land border and interland operations. This comprehensive approach ensures that no stone is left unturned in the fight against illicit drugs. “We work systematically with intelligence report and it has been yielding a good results”, he said.
It’s indeed a challenging time for drug barons in Nigeria, as the Agency have made a seizure of over 192,000 tonnes of illicit drugs including Cannabis Sativa, Heroin, Codeine and Tramadol since the beginning of the year till date. NDLEA has also arrested and prosecuted the traffickers responsible for peddling these destructive substances.
On people’s assumption that the Agency is not doing enough in the fight against drugs movement in the country, Mr. Abubakar strongly disagrees. He firmly believes that the agency is taking all necessary steps to stop the influx of illicit drugs into the country. Under the leadership of Buba Marwa, the NDLEA has made significant strides, arresting numerous drug barons and seizing their properties, which have been forfeited to the Federal Government. He also compared the agency’s performance to previous years, Mr. Abubakar notes that more arrests have been made, and public awareness campaigns have been intensified. The NDLEA’s commitment to curbing drug abuse and illicit trafficking is evident in its actions, and the facts speak for themselves. With the agency’s continued efforts, Nigeria can look forward to a drug-free future.
Mr. Abubakar is also setting the record straight that NDLEA is not just focused on combating illicit drugs in big cities or areas with heavy media coverage. They’re tackling the issue head-on across the country, including rural areas where drugs like Cannabis Sativa are being cultivated and sold. He made it known that NDLEA’s has a nationwide presence and its offices are situated all over the federation making it easy for people to report illicit drug activities. Plus, they have a 24/7 call line for whistleblowers to anonymously share information. This shows that NDLEA is committed to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking, no matter where it’s happening.
Drugs trafficking is a multi dimension business, today lots of Nigerians are wasting in various jails outside the country for drugs related cases but the proactiveness of the Agency, the number of Nigerians imprisoned abroad for drug-related offenses has decreased significantly. NDLEA is making sure that all items coming in and out of the country are thoroughly inspected. NDLEA has made significant strides in curtailing the influx of illicit drugs into the country by creating awareness and urging critical stakeholders and parents to educate their wards on the dangers of drug abuse and to achieve this NDLEA is not resting on their oars at all.
