NMGS, CUSTOMS PARTNERS TO TACKLE RESOURCE SMUGGLING
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) is pushing for a stronger partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to tackle the growing problem of illegal smuggling of natural resources. This illicit activity is not only causing significant revenue loss but also depleting the country’s critical raw materials.
During a recent visit to the NCS Headquarters in Abuja, NMGS President Professor Akinade Olatunji stressed the urgent need to enhance the capacity of Customs officers. He emphasized that these officers must be equipped to identify and safeguard natural resources effectively.
“We are aware of the vast quantities of resources leaving the country illegally. These finite assets must be protected” Olatunjistated. The NMGS president noted that collaborating with agencies at exit points would ensure proper documentation, revenue remittance, and duty payments.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, welcomed the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society’s (NMGS) proposal for collaboration. He recognized NMGS’s expertise and identified opportunities for joint efforts to combat the smuggling of raw materials.
“Illicitly smuggled resources flow out of the country without proper checks. Through rigorous monitoring and accurate documentation, we can close gaps in export taxation, track resource destinations, and ensure appropriate revenue is generated,” Adeniyi said.
Adeniyi pledged to prioritize officer training and cooperation to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources and promote economic growth. Ultimately, both parties committed to working together to achieve these goals.
