TINCAN ISLAND CUSTOMS SET TO ROLL OUT B’ODOGWU TECHNOLOGY
The integration of cutting-edge technologies like Blockchain, E-Customs platforms, and Artificial Intelligence has significantly enhanced cargo clearance speed and reinforced commitment to global best practices. This was evident in the pilot phase of the B’Odogwu initiative at the PTML Command, according to Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller of the Tin Can Island Port Command.
Comptroller Onyeka assured ports industry stakeholders of his plans to deploy B’Odogwu, a Customs trade facilitation tool, at his command, following its remarkable success at the PTML Command. This move is expected to further streamline cargo clearance processes and improve overall efficiency.
Speaking at the year 2025 World Customs Day, held at Command’s Base in Tin Can Island Port, Apapa Lagos, Comptroller Onyeka announced a remarkable revenue generation success of ₦86 billion for the month of January, without even accessing the system. This achievement positions the Command to meet and surpass its annual target.
In line with the theme of the event, “Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security and Prosperity”, he noted that trade facilitation remained a cornerstone of the Service and Tin Can Island Port Command has adopted innovative approaches towards streamlining processes, reducing delays and enhancing the ease of doing business at the Command.
Comptroller Onyeka highlighted the benefits of the Unified Customs Management System, B’Odogwu, which include standard automation procedures, transparency, and reduced human interference at the Command. This system aims to streamline customs processes, enhance efficiency, and facilitate seamless trade. To achieve these goals, he emphasized the importance of Regular interactions with stakeholders to ensure efficiency, Collaborative relationships with Terminal Operators, Freight Forwarding Associations, Shipping Companies, and Regulatory Agencies to foster a synergistic approach to customs operations.
Comptroller Onyeka also noted that the future application of big data analytics, featured in the System, has assisted the Service, in its ability to intercept illicit trade while also assisting the Customs service in, promoting legitimate trade.
He however urged his Officers and Men, to continue to adhere to commitment and consistent, professional and innovative service delivery in accordance with the dictates of the International Customs Day, 2025.
