FRANCIS BUNU ELECTED UNOPPOSED AS NEW MWUN PRESIDENT GENERAL

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has a new President General, Comrade Francis Bunu, who was elected unopposed at the Union’s 6th Delegates Conference in Lagos. This historic election took place recently, marking a significant milestone for the union.

Bunu, formerly the Deputy President General, takes over from Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, who led the union for eight years, with his tenure ending on March 28. Adeyanju has assumed the role of Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), in line with the union’s constitution.

Comrade Francis Bunu was born on November 20, 1975, in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State. A seasoned maritime leader, he has held various key positions within the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).

Notably, he served as Deputy President General from 2021 and previously held the office of President of the Seafarer branch of MWUN for two consecutive terms, starting in 2013.

With an illustrious career spanning over 24 years, Comrade Bunu has gained extensive experience working onboard various vessels both domestically and internationally, solidifying his expertise as a seasoned seafarer.

The election of Francis Bunu as President General also ushered in a new team of national officers who will serve alongside him for the next four years. The new officers include:
National Auditor: Comrade Robert Eze
National Trustees: Obidoma David and Raji Abdulateef.                                          Treasurer: Mukhaila Lawal
Vice Presidents: Boniface Udoh, Martina Njoku, Ibrahim Ohize, and Ganiu Dosunmu. Deputy Presidents: Funmi Fasan, Taofeek Dahiru, and Abubakar Bello

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Francis Bunu expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him, following his unopposed election as President General. He extended his appreciation to his predecessor, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, for his instrumental role in his emergence, and to the union members for the peaceful and unified atmosphere that prevailed throughout the electioneering process.

Bunu called upon industry stakeholders to collaborate with the union, aiming to propel it to greater heights while sustaining the remarkable legacies achieved under Adeyanju’s leadership.
