Customs, NES Forge Stronger Partnership to Advance Economic Growth
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) are poised to deepen their partnership in a joint effort to promote national economic development, ahead of the NES Annual Conference taking place from 8th-11th September 2025 in Abuja.
The NES National President, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, recently led a delegation –including members of the Governing Council and the Chairman of the FCT Chapter—on a courtesy visit to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, at the NCS headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the critical need for enhanced collaboration between the two institutions to support Nigeria’s broader development objectives. He noted, “The NES contributes through rigorous economic research and policy recommendations, while Customs plays a vital role in trade facilitation, revenue mobilisation, and enforcing fiscal policies that directly influence the economy.”
He stressed the value of integrating academic insights with the realities faced at the nation’s borders to create more effective policies and improve trade performance.
Professor Adenikinju extended a formal invitation to the CGC to participate in the upcoming NES conference, saying his experience and perspective would greatly enrich conversations focused on economic reform and progress. He also pointed out that the NCS’s comprehensive data on trade, revenue, and border activity makes it a key partner in crafting sound economic strategies.
In recognition of his contributions, the NES President announced the CGC’s nomination for the 2025 **Distinguished Public Service Award (DPSNES)**—one of the Society’s most prestigious accolades. The honour acknowledges his efforts in reforming Customs operations, enhancing revenue generation, and introducing innovative trade facilitation initiatives that have contributed to economic growth and stability.
The NES noted that the award is given to public officials whose work significantly advances the country’s economic agenda. The CGC’s nomination reflects the meaningful impact of reforms carried out under his leadership.
