Airline Operators’ Board of Trustees Praises Nigeria Customs for Implementing Business-Friendly Reforms
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), led by President Abdulmunaf Sarina, praised the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for implementing impactful business-friendly reforms that have ushered in a new era of cooperation between the airline industry and customs. On Monday, September 22, 2025, a senior delegation from AON’s Board of Trustees visited the NCS.
During the visit, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi acknowledged the vital economic role AON plays in Nigeria, emphasizing that their influence extends beyond financial investments.
“It’s encouraging to see that AON’s Board members and others are not only investors in aviation but also key contributors to the broader economy. We value the expertise and insights your members bring to this sector,” Adeniyi remarked.
He noted that discussions went beyond the 4% Free on Board (FOB) levy, with both sides reaching mutually beneficial agreements. The CGC also highlighted initiatives introduced by NCS to enhance business operations, such as the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program, advanced rulings for importers, and dedicated aviation desks at airports, seaports, and courier centers.
Adeniyi clarified that the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) is a regional commitment among West African countries, not a unilateral Nigerian levy.
On behalf of AON, President Allen Onyema praised CGC Adeniyi’s reform efforts and pro-business stance, describing the new customs leadership as collaborative rather than confrontational.
“Previously, dealing with Customs felt like an uphill battle, often leading to conflicts and airing grievances publicly. Since CGC Adeniyi took office, the Service has become more responsive and supportive of businesses. This is why the AON Board made this inaugural courtesy visit—to express gratitude and encourage the continuation of these positive changes,” Onyema said.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing capable leaders like Adeniyi, noting that the reforms have improved business conditions, generated employment, and boosted national revenue.
The AON leadership reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Customs Service to further develop Nigeria’s aviation sector and the wider economy.
