MWUN PLANS TO STRIKE OVER UNPAID CRFFN SALARIES.
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is taking a strong stance against the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) over unpaid salaries. Under the leadership of President-General Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, the union has threatened to embark on a strike if the CRFFN fails to settle the nine-month salary arrears owed to its employees, who are bonafide members of the MWUN.
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) wants to inform the public that they’ve tried every avenue to resolve issues with the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) but to no avail. Despite issuing ultimatums and attending multiple mediatory meetings, including one in Abuja on September 18, 2024, the CRFFN’s Acting Registrar has ignored them, disregarding all previously agreed-upon resolutions. The MWUN’s efforts to address these concerns have been met with defiance, including the CRFFN’s failure to pay wages to their members.
MWUN is outraged over CRFFN blatant disregard for a resolution to prioritize staff salary payments.The resolution clearly stated that payment of staffers’ salaries should be the top priority when funds become available, with no diversion of funds to other expenditures. However, CRFFN’s actions suggest a lack of commitment to resolving the salary issues. Despite agreeing to make salary payments the primary focus upon receiving funds, CRFFN diverted resources to organize a “Kangaroo” training for select staffers, leaving a substantial amount of unpaid salaries unresolved.
It’s deeply disappointing that despite the Union’s genuine efforts to collaborate with the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) under the Acting Registrar’s leadership, they chose to disregard the agreed-upon resolution. This decision harms our members’ well-being and violates their right to receive their hard-earned salaries. The CRFFN’s actions are particularly troubling, considering our Union’s extension of goodwill and willingness to work together.
MWUN has decided to speak out against CRFFN’s alleged impunity. Due to unpaid nine-month salary arrears, the Union may withdraw services from Nigerian Ports Authority, Dock Labour, Shipping, Freight Forwarding Agencies, and Oil & Gas platforms if the issue persists. The Union urges authorities to take note.
