FAKE SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS WORTH MILLIONS OF NAIRA CONFISCATED, DESTROYED BY SON
In another bold move to protect Nigerians, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has confiscated and destroyed millions of Naira worth of substandard items, including compromised vehicle tyres, fake spark plugs, defective doors, and cables. At the destruction site in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, SON’s Director General, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, represented by Director of Inspectorate, Mr. Pius Maji, emphasized that this action was crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens.
Today, we gather to witness the destruction of substandard products seized by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. This action underscores our unwavering commitment to public safety, consumer protection, and fair trade practices. The products being destroyed – including stuffed tyres, substandard steel doors, and faulty spark plugs – pose serious risks to Nigerians’ health and safety. Substandard tyres can lead to devastating accidents, unsafe doors compromise home and business security, and faulty spark plugs can cause engine failures, resulting in inconvenience and potential hazards.”, he said.
He further emphasized that the destruction of these substandard products aligns with SON’s mandate under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act No. 14 of 2015, which emp”owers SON to regulate and enforce product standards, ensuring only safe, quality, and certified products are available to Nigerian consumers.
H stated, “This is part of our broader effort to protect Nigerian consumers from harmful and counterfeit products. As an agency, we take our responsibility seriously, and today’s action is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods that undermine the safety, health, and security of our citizens. By taking decisive action, we are reinforcing the importance of adherence to product quality standards in Nigeria. Manufacturers, importers, and vendors must understand that the safety and welfare of the Nigerian public will always come first.
This is a firm reminder to all stakeholders in the Nigerian market – from producers to consumers – that SON will continue to ensure that substandard goods do not have a place in our country. We are dedicated to making Nigeria’s market safer and more reliable”.
“The event served as a stern warning to those involved in such illicit trade to cease or face the law. ‘Today’s action sends a clear message: SON will not tolerate threats to public safety and market integrity. We will continue to identify, seize, and destroy substandard products, holding accountable those who endanger Nigerians’ lives.’
I The DG used this opportunity to commend the diligent efforts of the Inspectorate and Compliance Department and all SON officials who work tirelessly to ensure that our markets remain safe and that the products we use meet the highest standards. “We also appreciate the support and cooperation of law enforcement agencies, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,Nigeria Customs Service, and other relevant authorities in the fight against substandard products.
He urged the public to always demand certified, quality products. While pledging that “together, we can ensure that the Nigerian market is free from the dangers of substandard goods.”
Chukwunonso reaffirmed his Organisation’s commitment as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to continue enforcing its mandate, upholding the law, and prioritizing the safety and well-being of every Nigerian.
