WDW 2025: MWUN PG, BUNU ADVOCATES FOR DECENT WORK WORLDWIDE
The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has joined the global community to mark the 2025 World Decent Work Day (WDW), emphasizing the importance of promoting decent working conditions under the theme: “For Democracy to Deliver Decent Work.”
Comrade Bunu highlighted the need for workers to uphold decency and diligence in their workplaces, noting that such values can only thrive in a democratic environment that truly serves its people. He stressed that every hardworking individual deserves fair wages and a conducive work environment—standards that should be upheld globally.
He further noted that for millions of workers across Africa, achieving living wages and social protection remains an ongoing struggle.
According to him, under the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC-Africa), every job should be safe, and every worker should be treated with dignity and respect. He emphasized that nations must place people above profit to ensure a life of true worth and meaning.
The maritime labour leader, industrial activist, and experienced administrator reiterated that the realization of decent work for all depends on the strength of democracy. He therefore called on African and global leaders to nurture and sustain democratic systems, which he said are essential for improving workers’ welfare.
Bunu lamented that many workers still live below acceptable standards, a situation that negatively affects their psychological wellbeing. He urged world leaders to act so that democracy can deliver on its promise of fairness and dignity at work.
Concluding his message, Comrade Bunu described World Decent Work Day as not just a celebration, but a call to action. He emphasized that achieving decent work for all is possible only through functional and people-centered democracies working in unity toward this shared goal.
