Ports Modernisation, National Single Window to Address Sector Challenges — NPA MD
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the country’s port system through the rollout of the National Single Window Project alongside an extensive ports modernisation programme.
Speaking during an interactive session with maritime journalists in Lagos, the Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance efficiency across the nation’s seaports.
Represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemekara, the MD explained that the modernisation effort will cover all ports nationwide, although implementation will commence in Lagos with a $700 million Federal Government investment.
He dismissed concerns that eastern ports were excluded from the £746 million modernisation agreement recently signed in the UK, clarifying that the project will be executed in phases across the country. According to him, the focus on Apapa and Tin Can ports reflects market realities, as cargo destinations are determined by port users, while the NPA serves as a regulator prioritizing stakeholders’ interests.
Dantsoho noted that the initiative aims to resolve persistent issues such as congestion and delays in cargo clearance, while also improving logistics through enhanced rail connections from the APMT terminal and other alternative transport systems.
He further disclosed that the Authority is reviewing the Efficiency, Throughput, and Optimization (ETO) system to strengthen logistics operations, assuring that the revised framework will ensure smoother implementation.
Highlighting past efforts, he added that eastern ports were included in previous dredging projects, while current investments are strategically directed toward areas with higher returns, making Lagos the logical starting point.
The NPA boss expressed confidence that the reforms will create a lasting impact on the ports sector and called on the media to intensify its watchdog role in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development.
He urged journalists to remain proactive and innovative in reporting, stressing the importance of a vibrant and independent press in driving societal progress.
