Customs Boosts AfCFTA Implementation with 3-Day Training Programme
The Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its dedication to implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area by launching a three-day training programme on Rules of Origin, held from 31 March to 2 April 2026. The initiative is designed to equip stakeholders with the technical expertise required to boost Nigeria’s participation in intra-African trade.
Declaring the programme open, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Assistant Comptroller General Nafiu Isiaku, described the training as vital for strengthening trade facilitation and enforcement. He noted that proper understanding and application of Rules of Origin are essential for ensuring trade transparency, competitiveness, and access to preferential markets.
Earlier, AfCFTA National Coordinator, Olusegun Olutayo, said the programme marks a shift from policy discussions to practical implementation. He stressed that the agreement must deliver tangible benefits such as jobs, income, and business opportunities for Nigerians.
He also highlighted the need for increased awareness and practical knowledge, especially for businesses, to enable them compete effectively across African markets. He commended the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and acknowledged support from development partners like the World Customs Organization and the European Union.
Participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained to ensure Nigerian businesses are not left behind. The training is expected to improve Nigeria’s preparedness to fully leverage AfCFTA and enhance its competitiveness in continental trade.
