Seme Customs Seizes ₦365m Contraband, Generates ₦19.8bn
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has intercepted contraband worth ₦365.16 million in Duty Paid Value (DPV) and generated ₦19.84 billion in revenue between January and July 2026.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Abdullahi Shuaibu Kaila, disclosed this on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a press briefing at the Seme Border Command in Badagry, Lagos State.
Kaila said the Command’s revenue collection represented a 24.45 per cent increase, surpassing its total 2025 revenue of ₦15.94 billion by ₦3.89 billion.
Among the major seizures were 1,306 sacks of expired and decomposing noodles, each weighing 50kg. The goods were discovered in a truck falsely declared to contain food items and were allegedly intended for repackaging and sale to unsuspecting consumers.
The Command also seized 1,268 bags of foreign parboiled rice smuggled through illegal routes, alongside 373 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, 90 packs of Tramaking 250mg, 69 packs of Royal Tapentadol 250mg and 310,000 sticks of Time/Yes cigarettes.
In a major security operation, Customs officers intercepted 3,300 cartridges of explosive materials being illegally transported through the border. The explosives and one suspect have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
Other seized items include a used speedboat, a water bike, a 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser, a 2016 Toyota RAV4 and a 2010 Nissan Versa.
Kaila warned smugglers against using the Seme corridor for illicit activities, stressing that the Command would continue to intensify its enforcement operations.
He said the Command’s revenue performance demonstrated that effective enforcement could go hand in hand with trade facilitation, adding that Seme Customs remained committed to supporting Federal Government reforms and promoting legitimate trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The CAC also commended sister security agencies and the media for their collaboration in promoting transparency and public confidence.
