Customs Hands Over Seized Canadian Loud to NDLEA, Intensifies Fight Against Drug Trafficking
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area I Command, has handed over 30 wraps of Canadian Loud, seized from a female passenger travelling from South Africa to Nigeria, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as part of efforts to curb the smuggling of illicit drugs into the country.
The seizure was made on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, when the passenger arrived in Nigeria. Details of the development were disclosed in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday, 8 October 2026, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs I, Barilule Aanee, on behalf of the Customs Area Controller.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller of Customs Salamatu Atuluku, emphasised that combating illicit drugs was critical to safeguarding public health and security, especially among young people. She noted that the harmful effects of substance abuse were not limited to individuals but also affected families and the wider community.
Atuluku stated that tackling illicit drugs remained essential to protecting public health and safety, warning that substances such as Canadian Loud could negatively affect young people’s mental health, decision-making abilities and productivity. She stressed the need for sustained efforts to prevent such substances from entering communities.
The Comptroller commended the officers responsible for the successful interception and acknowledged the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the NCS Management Team in enhancing the Service’s anti-smuggling operations. She reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intercepting illicit substances and ensuring that individuals involved in their trafficking were brought to justice.
Also speaking, the Assistant Commander General of Narcotics at the NDLEA, Nathaniel Negedu, praised the Customs Service for its successful interception and transfer of the seized substance. He underscored the importance of continued collaboration between both agencies in the fight against drug trafficking.
Negedu noted that the successful operation highlighted the value of cooperation between the NCS and the NDLEA, adding that both agencies must sustain their joint efforts to combat drug trafficking and address the serious threat it poses to society.
