MWUN PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO NIMASA
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, along with his national executive team, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The visit was aimed at engaging with the Agency’s Director-General and top management to discuss key matters concerning the biometric identification cards for the Union’s Dockworkers and Seafarers branches — all legitimate members actively working across the nation’s seaports.
Comrade Bunu emphasized that the biometric registration will help distinguish genuine, legally employed Dockworkers and Seafarers from impostors posing as Union members. According to him, this step is crucial to maintaining the Union’s credibility and ensuring that only verified personnel operate within the maritime sector.
He further highlighted to the NIMASA DG the broader significance of the biometric IDs, noting that accurate identification of registered Union members would enhance port security and reduce incidents of theft and cargo pilferage, ultimately contributing to a safer and more business-friendly port environment.
In addition, the Delta State-born labour leader reaffirmed MWUN’s ongoing support for NIMASA, referencing the Union’s collaboration with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) on plans to establish a Seafarers Recreation Centre in Apapa. He stressed the importance of such a facility for improving the well-being of sailors when they return from sea, stating that recreational opportunities on land are essential for their overall quality of life. The centre, he added, would not only benefit Union members but also serve the wider public, potentially generating economic value for the Union.
Dear In response, NIMASA Director-General Dr. Dayo Mobereola assured Comrade Bunu of the Agency’s continued commitment to the Recreation Centre project, which had been initiated under his predecessor. He pledged that his administration would honor the Agency’s part in the agreement. Dr. Mobereola also congratulated Comrade Bunu on his recent electoral victory and expressed optimism for continued strong collaboration between NIMASA and MWUN in advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector.
