MWUN Issues Ultimatum to Temile Management Over Unionisation Dispute
The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNO-WTSSA), has vowed to secure union representation for maritime workers employed by Temile Development Company Nigeria Ltd.
MWUN President-General, Comrade Bunu, warned that the company must respond to multiple letters sent by the unions and agree to a joint meeting within 21 days of this notice or face industrial action.
He stressed that no organisation operates above labour laws or trade unions, particularly in matters affecting workers’ rights. He condemned the continued casualisation of labour, describing it as outdated and unacceptable in today’s labour environment.
According to him, the era of exploitative employment practices is over, and any employer found engaging in such acts would be held accountable. He added that workers should not be subjected to poor wages under the guise of job creation.
The unions noted that several formal requests had been made to the Port Harcourt-based company, seeking the unionisation of its employees, who are eligible members of MWUN and NMNO-WTSSA. However, Temile Development Company has consistently failed to respond.
Specifically, the company reportedly declined requests made on May 26, 2025; September 16, 2025; October 2025; and April 1, 2026, all titled “Request for the Unionisation of Our Members in Your Company.”
