MWUN Applauds Orion Marine, Seatransport for Increment in Sailors’ Remuneration⁶
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has commended the management of Orion Marine Services Limited and Seatransport Ltd for their remarkable and unprecedented increment in salaries for union members employed as sailors in both companies.
This salary adjustment follows a recent review of sailors’ remuneration in full compliance with the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) work book. The successful implementation of the NJIC provisions by Orion and Seatransport, in collaboration with MWUN, demonstrates a shared commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
Comrade Bunu, who recently emerged as the President-General of MWUN following a landslide victory, has consistently made the welfare of sailors the cornerstone of his administration. He signed the NJIC agreement alongside both managements and praised them for prioritizing employee well-being.
The veteran sailor and maritime expert lauded Orion and Seatransport for “putting smiles on the faces of their workers,” noting that optimal productivity in the maritime sector can only be achieved when employees are treated fairly and are happy in their roles.
Situated in Apapa, Lagos, both companies have set a standard of excellence in corporate governance and labor relations. The MWUN PG urged other maritime companies to emulate Orion and Seatransport, emphasizing that both companies operate within the same economic environment as others and have shown that fair remuneration is achievable.
Comrade Bunu issued a stern warning to non-compliant companies, stating that any organization failing to implement the NJIC provisions would face union action and be reported to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
